What Age is Best for Newborn Photos? (And What If Baby is Older?)

22 April 2026

Welcoming a new baby is such a special time, and many parents start thinking about newborn photos after their baby has already arrived.

One of the most common questions I’m asked is:

“Have we missed the window for newborn photos?”

The short answer is — no, you haven’t.

If you're looking for a Newborn Photographer in Dublin, here’s everything you need to know about timing, what to expect at different stages, and why it’s never too late to capture beautiful images of your baby.

Newborn photography is typically done when your baby is between 10–21 days old.

During this stage, babies tend to be:

Sleepier

More settled

Naturally curled

This allows for those soft, peaceful images many parents associate with newborn photography.

What happens if your baby is older than 3 weeks?

This is where many parents worry — but in reality, older newborn sessions can be just as beautiful.

If your baby is:

3–6 weeks old → you may see more stretching, alertness and gentle expressions

6–8 weeks old → more eye contact, personality and connection

Instead of very curled, sleepy poses, you’ll often capture:

Bright eyes

Little smiles

Beautiful natural interactions

Every stage brings something special.

A baby-led approach makes all the difference

My approach to newborn photography is completely baby-led.

That means:

  • I follow your baby’s comfort and cues
  • There is no pressure for your baby to sleep
  • Sessions are calm, flexible and relaxed

This allows me to photograph babies at a range of ages while still creating timeless, natural images.

Do older babies still get beautiful photos?

Absolutely.

Some of the most loved images parents choose are:

Eye contact shots

Tiny expressions

Natural, relaxed moments

While the style may differ slightly from early newborn images, the results are just as meaningful — and often more personal.

What if my baby is already a few weeks old?

Please don’t worry — it is never too late to book.

I regularly photograph babies who are a little older, and sessions are always tailored to suit your baby’s stage.

The most important thing is capturing your baby as they are, in those early weeks, before everything changes so quickly.

When should you book your newborn session?

Every newborn photography session in my Dublin studio is completely baby-led.

There is plenty of tiIdeally, newborn sessions are booked during pregnancy, after your 20-week scan.

However, if your baby has already arrived, you can still get in touch — I will always do my best to accommodate you where possible.
